What are the chances of this happening again anytime soon? I just wish the moon actually turned blue when it’s a blue moon. Wouldn’t that be awesome?
So if you read my previous post, it was about setting softer
gentler intentions for 2018 instead of those hard demanding “resolutions.” But....
Even with intentions, I need a game plan. Anyone who knows
me knows I like to break anything I want to accomplish --
projects, chores, errands, crafts, goals, intentions, you-name-it --
into small doable tasks. VERY. SMALL. TASKS. Then I include some (not too many or I’m overwhelmed &
nothing gets done😁) of these tasks on my Daily To Do List.
So this is how I get sh*t done.
1. What do you want to get done this year?—what are your main intentions for the year? Write them down.
These are large intentions. Maybe 4 — 6 Intentions.
My number 1 intention is “Good Health” or having a healthier lifestyle.
2. What activities do you want to do to make each intention happen? Here’s how I think of them.
If you accomplished most of these activities by the end of the year it would give you the sense that
your intention is in place and you are on the road.
Before you move onto the next step take a look at all of your activities.
Do you think it’s doable? Yes, you have a year to do it, but life happens.
Don’t set yourself up for failure. If you need to scale back on your
intentions and activities so you can see progress, then do that.
3. What do you have to do to complete your activities? If you look at the picture
of my 2018 Intentions layout above, you’ll see I have broken my activities down
even further into tasks. Like I said I like to break down everything into
tiny tasks. Then I can schedule a few of these tasks each day. This is what
works for me. I like to accomplish small tasks that I know are supporting
my overall intentions. I love to check off these tasks in my planner each day.
Then I can look back and see the progress I am making. I can also see
what is working and what’s not working so well.
So this is how I come up with my weekly layout. Look closely at the first picture above and you will see that I have a column that is set up to support my 2018 Intentions. The next photo shows my weekly layout completed for this week. I don't know if you can tell but most of my to-do items are in pencil. That way I can move them around or change them as the week progresses.
I have just begun to work with daily layouts. It is more work to set up each day (usually the night before.
I tried setting up all the daily layouts for the week, but stuff happens and things need to be changed. I find it easier to set up one day at a time.) But I leave lots of wiggle room so I can add appointments, errands, etc. I like having each day laid out. It may only be a "suggestion" for the day, one never knows what a day will actually be like. But I have my list so I stay on track as best I can.
Oh here's something important for me to say. I don't beat myself up if I don't get everything (or anything) on my daily layout completed. I just see what I can move to the next day or the day after that and keep moving.
How to accomplish that really large intention you set for this year? One little task at a time, baby, just one little task at a time.
